National Construction Week Print E-mail

As part of National Construction Week October 8-12th October, a year 5 Maths Group at Beaver Green School, Ashford took part in a series of events arranged by Denne Construction.

This involved workshops on the use of concrete and ratios used in concrete specifications. The pupils gained hands on experience in making up concrete mixes with sugar used as a substitute for cement.

They then learnt about testing of concrete and carried out strength tests using toblerone bars. The following day they learnt about areas and volumes using formwork pieces specially made for the event.

At the end of the week the 26 pupils visited Denne's site at Stanhope to meet the site team and to gain hands on experience of placing concrete in formwork. Batches of concrete were made up to the pupils own specification to be sent of to a laboratory for strength testing.

At a follow up workshop the pupils will be analysing the results of the strength tests and carryout their own tests on the concrete beams which they made on site.
