Three children nationwide have died and 266 were injured on construction sites between 2001 and 2006. These alarming statistics, published by the Health and Safety Executive, encouraged Denne Construction in partnership with Gallions Housing Association to highlight the potential dangers on construction sites to local primary school children in Thamesmead, Southeast London. Both organisations held a number of presentations on construction site safety. Denne also organised a competition to design posters aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of construction sites. Over 800 children from Jubliee, Hawsmoor and Windrush Primary Schools took part. Life size versions of the winning designs were reproduced and displayed on the hoarding at the boiler house site, located near each of the three schools. Construction work is currently in progress to turn the site into a £15 million new development consisting of 109 affordable homes for rent and shared ownership. Commenting on the initiative, Gallions’ Head of Development, Eileen St. Pierre, said: “Our effort so far is only the beginning. The posters convey an important message to young people about the importance of safety around construction sites. Everyone, including construction workers, parents and the community at large, has a role to play in ensuring that children are safe”. Graham Brown, Managing Director, Denne Construction said: “With the summer holidays fast approaching and the number of other major construction projects planned for Thamesmead, the ‘potential dangers on construction sites’ message has never been more important”. |
